What is Baroque?
Baroque is a style of unity imposed upon rich and massy detail. "Baroque Art" originated in Rome at the beginning of the 17th century. Baroque favors higher volumes, exaggerates decorations, adds colossal sculptures, huge furniture etc. Baroque art is a style in which painters, sculptors, and architects rummaged emotion, movement, and variety in their works. Baroque period furniture characteristics as well as baroque decor entails a style which designers show and display emotion, movement, and variety. Baroque furniture characteristics might also imply the piece in its entirety while still displaying rich and massy detail. Baroque favors higher volumes, exaggerates decorations and adds colossal sculptures. Baroque is a style characterized by exaggeration of movement, decorative excess, dramatic effects, exuberance and a grandeur that is at times pompous.
The Decor of Royalty!
Baroque decor was borrowed more or less directly from Louis XIV's Versailles Palace. Louis XIV utilized the Baroque style in order to display and promote the idea of his regal glory, especially with his palace at Versailles. The Versailles, with its grandiose combination of architecture, sculpture, painting, decoration, and (not least) the art of the gardener--represents one of the supreme examples of the Baroque fusion of the arts to create an overwhelmingly impressive whole. The rich and famous see the dramatic style of Baroque architecture and art as a means to impress visitors and express immense power and control. The Baroque style was also popular among the Roman Catholic Church in order to communicate religious themes that would touch the soul with emotion.
Baroque Decor History
During the 18th century, Baroque gradually gave way to the lighter, more decorative Rococo style. This type of art, which dated from about 1550 to 1750, was sometimes considered to be excessively decorated and overly complicated. Therefore, it is proper to say that baroque furniture characteristics would entail that the furniture or art be profusely ornamented and highly detailed, sporting gold, marble, nymphs, shepherdesses, cherubs, angels, mirrors and the like.
